Frequently Asked Questions
What is NEMO Shield™?
In 2006, NEMO began adapting its shelter technology for elite U.S. Special Operations Forces and launched its Shield™ product line. In the years since, many elite Warfighters have depended on NEMO tents, shelters, sleeping gear, weapons bags, and other products to take full advantage of what limited comfort and protection can be found on the battlefield. NEMO is intensely proud to serve the American Warfighter and allied partners, and aims to design, engineer, and manufacture the best equipment solutions possible. For much of the last decade, NEMO Shield™ has been engaged in research and development with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center and the U.S. Special Operations community. The focus has been on creating the next generation of cutting edge 1-2 person combat tents, specialized shelters for the arctic, and shelters for medical applications. Years of collaboration, testing, evaluation, and fielding of NEMO Shield™ products have culminated in forward thinking designs that reduce weight and cube, improve concealment, increase comfort and livability, and maximize operational flexibility and efficiency for the Warfighter.
Why does NEMO make products for military and law enforcement?
NEMO supports the men and women who serve this country and its allies. We are proud to do our part in giving our warfighters and law enforcement officers the best advantage possible. Our own family members and friends are among these men and women. However, our support of these men and women should not be seen as support of any particular policy or political party. NEMO has no political affiliations.

How do you determine the temperature rating of your sleeping bags and pads?
The temperature rating in each sleeping bag is derived from a combination of factors. First, there’s a formula for the amount of down in a given size bag to reach a certain warmth rating. That’s just a place to start. Next, bags are tested in the lab so far as possible. All the Spoon™ series bags are tested according to EN 13537. Some bags, because of being backless or rated for extreme cold temps, cannot be tested according to the EN procedure. We also make sure to examine all the different sleeping bag styles with NEMO’s thermal camera for cold spots. Lastly, but probably most importantly, bags are tested in the field with our A.P.T. program, some of them for more than a year. This is the ultimate proof that the design and temperature rating are appropriate. The lab can only tell you so much compared to using the products in the field.
The sleeping pads follow a fairly similar process. To determine the temperature rating of our sleeping pads, NEMO uses a combination of R value testing, long term user testing feedback in multiple environments, and further material component lab testing.
It’s important to remember that the temperature rating is meant solely as a guide, and is not a guarantee. The comfort level each user experiences is influenced by many factors including metabolic rate, type of shelter, insulation level of the ground you are sleeping on (snow, platform, dirt), clothing worn when sleeping, sleeping position, etc.
